Description

Vintage Plant Tender Watering Spike Ceramic Water Feeder Green Water Pump
This Watering Spike is in fair/okay condition with several colored in glaze flakes/chips and one repaired break. I hated to even put up for sale but I did because I like the shape and it has its original Made In Japan paper label. It doesn't even look like it was ever used, so how did it get so much damage? These are just fun
ceramic
whimsicals that are
practical
and functional.
You poke them in the dirt of potted plant, fill the reservoir with water and the unglazed spike will leach out water into the soil to keep your plant watered for a few days.
I found one reference to these Plant Waterers in my Holt-Howard book...It reads:
"Weekend Willie" was probably the very first whimsical ceramic plant waterer with a head created by any company. Although tube-type plant waterers were in existence 40 years ago, Holt-Howard was the first company to incorporate a ceramic head that holds water and gradually releases the water through a porous non-glazed cone. Just fill Willie's head with water and he'll take care of your plant in your absence. Willie was made in different colors and was promoted and introduced by B. Altman & Co.
See last picture from the same book identification.
I bought my first one in the early 1970s from Avon. You can still buy them today in glass and other materials but they are not as fun as the vintage ceramic ones.
Over the years I would run across them at antique stores, swap meets, vintage shows, estate sales, garage sales and thrift stores so I started a collection of them.
To display them I would find vintage ceramic windows boxes and fill them with sand to poke the spike down into so they'd stand for viewing.
When found you will usually find they have been used, so expect to see staining inside where the water is poured/stored, the spike is stained from being in the dirt, typical calcium build up from the hard water we all have. However, I will describe any damage such as glaze flakes, chips, cracks or hairlines.
FYI-ebay's new search "requirements" have to filled in with information for their search engines and some are not modifiable....like the time period. I tried to put in a "time" range, 1950s-1970s...it would only accept one date 1960s.
Pleaseeeeee READ!!!
I do COMBINED SHIPPING!
If combining shipping please "send request for combined shipping invoice" with revised shipping cost BEFORE you pay! I can not adjust shipping once you pay!!!! It appears Ebay does NOT automatically credit back their commission on the shipping fees that they charge me and Paypal doesn't refund any fees at all anymore!
U.S. Shipping only...No International Shipping.
Hawaii & Alaska quoted shipping fee with insurance so please request an invoice to pay from. If shipping cost do not cover Hawaii & Alaska I will need to send you another invoice for additional shipping charges.
For the most part on bigger heavier items I calculate shipping from the West Coast California to the East Coast as worst case scenario. If you are on the West Coast or Midwest and want a better shipping cost estimate then just email me with zip code BEFORE you pay. Once you pay I can't adjust the invoice!!! The Post Office Shipping just went up again in January and I try very hard to ship as cheap as possible yet safe and arriving perfect.
