Vintage Mid Century Wall Street Ash Tray - "Busted" by the Ticker TapeAttention All Millennial Bitcoin and GME Traders.
Way back in the prehistoric days, before the smart phone and even before the personal computer, the only way to obtain near real time
stock quotes was through a device called the stock ticker. Trading floor market makers used an advanced telegraph keyboard to punch in stock prices. The signal was carried over
telephone lines and received and printed by stock tickers onto a long slim paper tape. Because a real live human was actually typing this info, the company names were abbreviated in a form
of short hand. To this day, traders still use these 3 and 4 digit abbreviations when referring to stocks. Only brokerage houses, large corporations and the very wealthy could afford a ticker. Since the NY Yankees or Brooklyn Dodgers would win the World Series so frequently, championship parades were common in New York City. When these parades passed through Wall Street, the brokers would
throw used ticker tape out of their office windows as a form a confetti in celebration. Although stock tickers were replaced by main frame computers by the early 1970s, the phrase " ticker tape parade" continues to live on when referring to a city's championship parade.
Hand painted ceramic ash tray. Although the manufacturer's label is missing, I had another one of these and it was manufactured in Japan. This ash tray was made in two sizes and
this is the smaller version.
