    Description

Up for your consideration is a very, very, rare Mid-century Modern collage that dates 1960's when there was a resurgence of 'back-to-nature' thought and consciousness in our culture that lasted well into the 1970's. The collage shows seed pods, sea shells, driftwood, tree bark, and polished agates all found along the shoreline of the Pacific ocean usually in shallow inlets where the ebb and flow of water begin to polish wood to a satin smooth finish called drift wood. This constant ebb and flow also begins to polish stones until they are smooth and shiny and are called agates after they are polished by the tide. Sea shells are also found on the shores of the Pacific and in inlets too usually they are exoskeletons that once contained live mollusks in them and no longer do only to be swept ashore. Dried seed pods and dried tree bark is cradled in the shallow waters in inlets left only to dry out by the suns hot rays. All of these natural phenomenon are demonstrated in very creative artistic endeavor called collage art an early 20th-century French term for an art form where an assemblage of materials are literally glued together to form an art work like the collage in this listing. The overall purpose of collage in art & design is is to bring together or 'glue' together visual elements to explore their commonalities like the shoreline pieces that make up this collage.
The term collage was coined by Braque and Picasso around 1910, and the term comes from the French word to 'glue together.' The movement itself emerged under this pair of artists, who began working with various mediums like paper, card board, magazine paper, wood, textiles, and many more mediums. In the case of this collage in my listing, wood, sea shells, agates, seed pods, drift wood and tree bark is the medium to create what Braque and Picasso termed 'avant-garde' or new and unusual or experimental ideas, especially in the arts.
Besides this picture being an example of the 20-centruy artistic phenomenon called collage an 'avant-garde' art form it has several other unique features to it like being able to mount it on a wall vertically or horizontally, the collage is mounted to a 1/4" thick pine wood plank stained dark walnut like the pine wood framing that frames the collage in the middle, and the 1/4" plank that the collage is 'glued' onto is once again mounted onto a 1/2 board that is affixed to the birch wood background plank. So, the dark walnut recessed frame, the birch wood background, and the collage in the middle has a look and feel of relief work to it as the collage is raised from the birch wood 1/2" giving its overall appearance that of a relief mounted work of art.
    The collage measures 20 1/2" long X 10 1//2" X 1 1/4" deep wide, and is in
    'mint

condition for its age. A collage, like the one in this listing, is great for any nautical themed
    décor
, a great Mid-century piece for that new MCM room your pouring your heart and soul into, a great piece of wall art for the den/library/home office, a time worn look into a 'shabby-chic' room, or anywhere you might want a collage with some of the wonders of nature washed up from the sea.
