Description

Up for auction is a great vintage metal wastepaper basket / rubbish bin / trash bin decorated with an image of London featuring Big Ben taken from a painting by the Dutch artist Jan Korthals (1916-1972). There's no date on the image, which is signed on the bottom right, but I believe it is from the mid-1960s, though of course the bin may have been produced some years later. The image is printed on a piece of paper that's been attached / glued to the metal container.
The flattened cylindrical bin measures approximately 13 inches high by 10 inches wide (at its widest point). There are no maker's marks anywhere on the metal (including on the underside / bottom and interior, which are painted burgundy / maroon like the part of the bin without the image on it), so I don't even know if it was made in the United States or somewhere else -- but I did source it in a Connecticut estate sale a few years ago.

Jan Korthals
was a Dutch painter whose work was characterized by its Impressionistic rendering and focus on the landscape of Amsterdam. Often depicting on the city's iconic waterways, Korthals’ style features atmospheric perspective with boats and figures in the foreground framing the misty architecture in the distance, loosely rendered with warm ochre hues. Born in 1916 in the Netherlands, Korthals completed his artistic education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and went on to travel extensively throughout Europe. He achieved widespread commercial success for his work, contributing frequently to greeting card and calendar illustrations. Korthals died in 1972.
The overall condition of this vintage decorated metal wastepaper basket is good to very good, considering it's over 50 years old. The object has the to-be-expected usual bangs, bumps, spotting, paint loss, etc., but there's no major damage in the way of large dents or the like. The bottom of the inside appears rusty, and it possibly has some water damage on it. The bin has neither a musty nor smoky odor.
This vintage rubbish / trash bin featuring an image of Big Ben and environs in London by Jan Korthals is being sold AS IS, AS FOUND AND AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am also including a Buy It Now price.
Shipping and
handling for the bin, which will be sent securely wrapped in a large cardboard box (and hopefully won't get banged around too much in transit): $CALCULATED to U.S. addresses (via Priority Mail) and to Canada and to the United Kingdom (these latter two via First Class International Mail).
