Depending on what muscle car enthusiast you are arguing with, you might hear that the original muscle car came about when Oldsmobile put the Rocket 88 engine into the 1949 88 model. Regardless, by 1964, Oldsmobile wasn't exactly known for putting very big engines into mid-sized cars. But it turns out, the company did have some muscle car aspirations that came together pretty quickly with the 442 package that was now in its 2nd year and competing with the GTO from Pontiac.
Offered here is a stunning 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 convertible that is pristine example of the muscle car. This 442 was built in Lansing MI and the following is what we decoded off cowl tag on firewall:
Tinted Windows and windshield
4spd manual transmission
W-29 Trim – all 442 markings and equipment
Fisher body with sequence number 8998
White vinyl Strato bucket seats
Vehicle was treated to a very nice restoration and according to the previous owner less than 2,500 miles have been logged since the frame off restoration was complete. It is believed to be that only 1695 of these 442's with this combination were built when new leaving a small fraction of these still on the road. Vehicle is a true standout that shows extremely well with a ton of eyeball and proper setup. Vehicle was restored with a keen eye for detail and originality. The power top, wipers, lights, heater and blinkers all work.
Vehicle comes with proper cowl tag, original owner's manuals, Oldsmobile protect-o-plate in manual and clean title. This is a true work of art and a great investment.
